It apparently ruined the game.
The honor system, from what i could gather, gives players points for killing enemy players. It was supposed to make the game better, but it doesn't give penalties for people killing lower level characters, so high level people will gank lower level characters just for points. Hell, they screwed up when they put Battlegrounds info into the manual, and the y still haven't put it into the game yet.

*this is from the mid level range focus, as not everyone likes grinding for an entire day, day in day out*
WoW's HS is actually great, although it gives no penalties for the high-low gank - it doesn't give a bonus either. If they are coded "grey" in their level. Now, this may've changed as I remember the colour system being taken out, but I think the in-game calculation stays the same. The reason there's no penalty for killing low levels is the raid aspect. You are sometimes forced to slaughter a low level, usually because they're engaged in scouting or harrass actions. An example would be a lvl 11 Troll running around using that quest reward clue on high level Allaince raiding XR ... oh those were good times!
The HS still has some downsides, but it's one of the only redeming factors of WoW IMO. Saying that, WoW's boring and just realies on being VERY addictive to keep you playing.
EDIT:: I'll exaplain the HS a bit
---
WoW PvP (on a PvP server) works on a basis of multiple zones. Allaince, Horde, and Contested. The first two make up only a couple of the MANY areas (almost all are contested) and are starter areas. The way it works is when in starter areas, members of the opposing factions are ALWAYS PvP enabled, while the natives of that area can choose to flag themselves as PvP Enabled (by typing "/pvp"). After typing that command, they have to be OUT OF ALL PVP for 5 minutes for them to become unflagged - ie safe. So if some lvl 5 player wants to flag themselves as PvP against 20 raiding lvl 40's in the Barens... let them die
Now, contested areas - the bulk of the game - are places where both factions are PvP Enabled. Hence, the ganking aspect ! You are PvP enabled whenever you enter this area. You will auto-matically be unflagged from a Contested to Safe zone transition, the 5 minutes are not neccessary.
In relation to the HS, if you're running around STV alone you'll most likely be ganked - regardless of level. That's just how it goes. The fact is that people are rabid for PvP/hate on WoW, and the designers understand this. That's why there's NO PENALTY for high-low ganking ... on the flip side, no pts are gained and you're only given a warning that it wasn't fair and it's recorded. So you can tell who a cheating ganker is.
Note that this may be a bit off .. as my game card ran off before I could get everything in mind :/

You'd have to PvP for months to actually get the HS equipment. But its still a form of reward for long-term players.

Yes, ganking only occurs in contested areas.
And you only get honour for killing someone within 12 levels of you.

People are whining about the honor system more than necessary. Yes, certain parts of it suck (meaning, for those not at maximum level), but it's an overstatement to say that it ruined wow.

The honor system didn't ruin WoW, it was the total lack of pirate ships and damsels needing distress which led to it's demise, at least for me and my henchmen.

It ruined WoW for me. I hate it so much. I was lvl 58 and I couldnt grind at all without having a raid group of 20 rogues unstealth and gank me. It was just stupid. Honor system turned the game into a bunch of raid groups killing. I cancled my subscribtion. It's to bad, I dont think any game will be as good as it was in my eyes. This game would be close, but the fact that is a morpg and not a mmorpg bugs me. I liked being able to walk around and see people, but i'll get over that.
Back on topic. Honor system killed WoW.
